SXSW 2014: The Wilderness of Manitoba

Wilderness of Manitoba

Having lived in the province, the name of this band really encapsulates a certain desolate isolation that can be rather encompassing if you don’t fight against it, which is an innate instinct in its residents. I made it through a couple of winters but ended up just going back for the summers and have an ultimate respect for the warriors of Winnipeg who persist with those inhumane conditions.

Their music is well constructed and at a mostly mellow pace which often means you have to be in the mood to appreciate such intricate work but there are moments like in Echoes, below, that the pace picks up and the vocals take the lead and you realise how good a band they are.
