2000 Trees 2014: Dad Rocks!

Dad Rocks!

I’m great at not judging bands purely on their name but I really didn’t expect much of a band called “Dad Rocks!“. The thoughts it evokes for me are middle-aged middle-of-the-road rock bands, Dad Dancing and a band that, in school kids would accuse each other’s father of being their favourite band “Gay Dad”.

And so, if you will imagine me slapping you around the face with the in-sleeve of his debut album “Mount Modern” and shouting-  thou shalt not judge a band by its name and thou shalt not judge G-Unit by The Game.

Icelandic born Snævar Njáll Albertsson is the innovator behind Dad Rocks!, the solo moniker he adopts away from his day job in heavier “Death-indie” band Mimas. Both of which are signed to Big Scary Monsters which is why we have the fortune of such magnificent music regularly adopting our shores.

Snævar is nothing if not innovative, at the moment he’s offering fans the opportunities to record their own versions of his newest song which he will then select the best three of and incorporate into a collaborative creation.

Crash Test Dummies and They Might Be Giants definite influences, Battle Hymn of the Fox Father is just glorious and the best example of the standard we’re dealing with here. Lyrically and musically intricate, a sumptuous tapestry of chamber rock, acoustics and brass making for a decadent and immersive listening experience that I can only imagine of how it will play live.

Elsewhere it does get quite introspective and lighter musically which is fine, even if you prefer things down the dirty-metal end of the 2000 Trees spectrum a dose of this would be good for anyone’s festival spirits.
